There are no PHC cups which may cause 'problems' when used with the Alex 103.
However, the smaller cups may produce what some players would regard as an unacceptable degree of brightness or harshness in the sound. So,bearing in mind that one of the inbuilt characteristics of the 103 is its potential for brightness (admittedly not necessarily always exploited by some players) we suggest avoiding cups such as the 20, 20A ,and 20AX,which would exaggerate the brightness, certainly in all-round playing. This is good sense anyway, since these cups are intended for specialist high-register use.
Other than that, our numbering system and its relevance to the range of the horn is quite logical, and for the Alex 103 the following are suggested:
High-to-middle range: 21,21A,22,22A 23, 23A.
The 'A' versions of the latter work very well with the 103.
Middle-to-low " : 24,24A, 25, 25A.
Once again , the 'A' versions are particularly recommended for Alex use.
Low : 30, 35.
Of course other players may have different views. The above are our broad recommendations, but in the final analysis the players' comfort and overall satisfaction is of more over-riding importance than any generalizations, however logical or categorical.
