The strong likelihood is that the 'N' rim is much older than the 21A cup. Until about 3-4 years ago, we admit, there were a few intermittent problems like this sort of thing.
Several years ago the technician who was then making PHC mouthpieces (and also mouthpieces by
Paxman, Wick and a few others) went out of business.
John, our technician since 1998, uses a CNC lathe which gives a repeatable accuracy of + or- 1 thousandth of an inch; this falls within the Aero-Space standards of accuracy. If the N rim had been made by John, this mis-match simply wouldn't/ couldn't have happened.
Re your second query:
It's clearly beyond our power to predict what 'might' happen if you try a smaller rim etc.!
Our best advice is to get a current PHC cup and rim from Paxman, and see for yourself what the quality is like!
