You refer to annealed mouthpiece cups and ask whether the PHC process is "more involved than just the annealing process". The answer is yes. Anyone can do a basic annealing job with a blow torch or a domestic oven and will be able to make a slight change to their mouthpieces.

We set out to make a significant change to the way the mouthpieces would feel to play. Obviously we are not going to give out our recipe but the results have exceeded our expectations. Several important factors involved include the exact type of brass we use, the exact temperature of the heat treatment, the exact amount of time the mouthpieces are exposed to this very high temperature, the gas/atmosphere in the heating chamber, the cooling technique used etc. This work can only be done by specialist annealers which is one reason why the PHC "Z" Cups take longer to make and cost more to buy.
