I suspect that the 'special manufacturing technique' involved in the production of the new PHC cups is a closely guarded secret simply because the PHC people (understandably) don't want other mouthpiece makers to copy it!
The great Cremonese violin makers (eg Strad etc) didn't tell the world the secrets of their varnish and their wood preparation/ seasoning etc.!
