In view of the previous postings on this topic, including some which seemed to imply we should curb our curiosity, I think it inevitable that players would want to know more.
There is perhaps a gender issue here, too: many (most?)women may well be content to play on a mouthpiece or a horn, choosing to remain ignorant of the technical aspects of their design and comfortable simply to feel that things function as they do. It is more typical of men to want to get involved with these matters - it's the "tinkering with the car/hi-fi/computer" thing that can drive women up the wall! Yes, I know there are a lot of incompetent male would-be engineers out there! I'm probably one of them!
Having said that, if we are to achieve progress, somebody's got to get technical, and the more interest Joe Public takes in such matters the more the experts have to deliver.
