Lip Buzzing (good or bad?)

What is the perception of you all in regards to lip buzzing without a mouthpiece? Personally I do it a lot and have encouraged my students to do it also. Lately, I have picked up some books and it seems to be discourage to do it at all.

Most of the books I recently read encourage a little buzzing on the mouthpiece alone, for a small amount of time. But are against buzzing without.

Pro? Cons? any facts? or is it all opinion?
