I for one don't belive in the huge advantages of free-buzzing. In fact, a highly esteemed professor who shall remain nameless here once told me it could be the direct route to disaster... That might be taking it a bit too far, but he got his point across. Anyway, when freebuzzing, you don't have the mouthpiece-rim to help you isolate which fibers should vibrate and which shouldn't. If not told otherwise, the entiere lip will vibrate when your brain sends the "buzz-command" to your lips. What you wanna pratice, I think, is the fibers that should vibrate; inside the rim - why waste time training something in a way it's not used whe playing. Personally I am a great fan of mouthpiece playing - even sometimes just playing on the rim alone. The mouthpiece dosen't have as many dodgy corners as the horn and is great source for getting rid of bad habits. It's great for pitch, sound, articulation..all sorts of stuff. And it's a lot easier to take it with you if you wanna play a couple of tunes when walking the dog..
