Personally I'm not a fan of free buzzing, for reasons already mentioned above. But I like to take it a bit further even, why buzz on a mouthpiece alone? The only reason I could think of is 'warming up' the lips.. for practising, can't think of any really. Everybody plays in a different way, on his personal horn and mouthpiece combination. When playing with a horn, there is a certain resistance. On just the mouthpiece or the rim, that resistance isn't there right? I don't know about other people, but even if I can buzz something right on a mouthpiece, that doesn't necessarily mean I can play right on the horn.
