But still, even when you don't take resistance in to consideration, I think a horn mouthpiece is too small in diameter to really have a benefit from 'free buzzing'. When you put it on your face, no matter how you look at it, it will affect the muscles there.
Here's a little experiment, control your embouchure as much as possible with free buzzing. Now play on your horn and mouthpiece for a while, in the middle of the playing session. Switch to a larger I.D. rim. It will no doubt feel a lot different, exactly because the rim greatly affects how a player should use his/her muscles around that location.
This is just my opinion though, and I'm happy to hear some others!
