I used to buzz without the mouthpiece but my teacher Mr Halstead advised me that my embouchure was gradually becoming too 'stretched'.
Now I simply do a pre-warm up by flapping the lips, as if saying 'brrrrr' on a cold day.
I've also found that buzzing on the mouthpiece with an additional extension such as a 'b.e.r.p' or a 'Halstead Buzz-Buddy' is much better for warming up than on the mouthpiece alone. Although it's more expensive, I prefer the Buzz-Buddy as it looks nicer and actually makes a fairly good tone!
