I find you can just about make out whether there is a parallel 'throat' by holding the mpce up to the light and sighting down it. As for the backbore being straight or curved, I'm not an expert in mouthpiece making but I imagine that the tooling to form the backbore could be made with a straight sided taper, or not, but that a 'stock' tool would be straight.
Where is our pet physicist - would there be any difference in the playing characteristics one way or the other?
