More interesting insights. I imagine that to provide a 'ledge' as you say in a horn mouthpipe for the end of the mouthpiece shank to butt against would mean re-designing the mouthpipe entirely, as the smallest internal diamter of the pipe would need to match the inner diameter of the end of the mouthpiece. There seems to be a large variation in 'permissible' dimensions for the venturi of the mouthpipe. I have heard of pipes with venturii from 7.3mm to 7.9mm. So perhaps in the case of horns this aspect of the design is not very crucial, unlike baroque trumpetes.

Actually, I have a natural trumpet that I made under the excellent guidance of Messrs Seraphinoff and Barclay. Being only a moderately skilled horn player, when I had finished it I couldn't tell if all the notes were there. I was fortunate to be able to give it to a top exponent of the subtle art of clarino trumpeting, J F Madeuf, who took it up to the 16th harmonic with ease. Its mouthpiece receiver was mot made with great dimensional accuracy or attention...

I think it was JFM's lip that did it.

Forgive my spelling mistake - who did the experiments you mention?
