I suppose it depends if you want a job or not. Play it the way he suggests and it will show you can read music. First the notes as they are on the page, and I don't see where he can be criticized for establishing a point of departure, then you can try and get some wondrous revelation past an egocentric conductor. You know, if you don't play what's written, you are playing it wrong. This is where dogmatic literal shite wins every time, and, gets you paid for doing it. Seifert, Tuckwell, Brain, all learnt it this way and Cass has at least sat down and explained it. Try and talk and play like that in the same sentence. I furthermore don't think he's trying to impress any "flash git" horn players, just show how to do his job, which is being part of an orchestra.Actually, after a bit of research, he did the first performance of the Ligeti Horn Trio I think and there is a CD with Peter Maxwell Davis's "Sea Eagle" and other stuff that I have and frankly.... he can certainly play.
