I might just add to the above, I have played a Conn 8D as my 'default' horn for over 40 years( but use a Paxman 40 for anything really high) but my reason for doing so is more to do with the 'feel' of the horn rather than the sound of it.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I do sometimes sound somewhat dull and foggy on recordings when using the 8D. However, there is one CD recording in particular on which I sound much more focussed and intense, and that is the ECO Wind Ensemble's Dvorak Wind Serenade, on which I used a Holton Farkas H-179!
