Once again , a sweeping generalisation: "not as dark a tone as with(sic) a Conn" you say. Which models of Yamaha and Conn do you refer to? Of course a 667 doesn't even attempt to sound like a Conn (except perhaps the light sounding 6D, 10D etc) but the 668, 668V and 668II come pretty close to an 8D.
And who said that Yamahas are cheap(er)?
