I have loads of advice but would love more about a good cup to go with a 4 rim. Something that will give a really nice free blow :o and a nice solid high register. I've tried the 21 but i find it gives a very thin sound. Currently using a 23 as a experiment was even thinking of a 24.

I play a Alex 103

Advice greatly received.

Try the PHC 25A.
Im my opinion the best-balanced cup all round.
:D

24A & 25A both work well with Teutonic horns, slightly different tonal character, if possible try both to see which suits you best.

If you want your PHC cup to fit your Alex mouthpipe perfectly you could try an E taper PHC cup, (E for Alexander.)

Mike Bosley has them in stock at Mikes Music Ltd Tel 01243 821434. He also has the PHC version of a Paxman 4 rim which fits a PHC cup perfectly. Mikes Music Ltd accepts returned mouthpieces bought direct from Mikes Music Ltd if you should change your mind or decide to try another cup or rim.

You can e-mail Mike Bosley at mikesmusicltd@hotmail.com

Just a thought. A PHC 4 rim in stainless steel is another option. They can be polished or left unpolished depending on your preference.

all a matter of taste and habit of course, but I agree with this; I've just done a quite heavy quintet session mostly using my fav, a 25a - but resorting to my 22 when faced with some higher stuff later on. I find the 22 complements the 25a rather well; still possible to get a good response lower down but helpful above the staff.

@ TonyC: I didn't know PHC made a Paxman 4 rim. Which is this?

Yes we now have PHC 'Paxman style' 4, 3 & 2 rims. These rims are available in silver plate, gold plate & acetal. They fit all PHC cups perfectly which is why we made them.

The PHC 'First' mouthpiece is now available to horn teachers at a special promotional rate of four 'First' one-piece mouthpieces for £80. They are similar to a Paxman 4B but better.

I play a 103 with an Alex 11 mouthpiece, works well for me and has ironed out some of the quirks of trying to play a PHC mouthpiece with an Alex! Other 1st horns I know that play Alexanders play on an Alex 33, worth giving them a go. I resisted for a long time and haven't looked back! :D

You need to try a new PHC E taper mouthpiece, designed for all Alexander horns. The equivalent rim to the Alex 11 & 33 is an AS-18 or an S-18. You can use these rims with all PHC E taper cups.

Why do peole still play these things? They are very expensive, not so well made now and still sound horrible. Is there a world class Principal Horn in the USA or UK who plays one? A 'world class player Principal Horn' is the question. :? Even Stefan Dohr avoids playing one now he has safely got the job. ;) In the UK they hunt in packs in two orchestras, a bit like U boats. :o The Alex 1103 is an excellent horn so this is not an Alex bashing post.
