I was surfing the web and saw that PHC are about to produce new bowl shaped mouthpieces for high register playing. Is this true?

The truth is that we already make two very shallow cups for high playing. The PHC "20" and "20AX" cups are part of the PHC range and have been for a long time.

http://horncups.com/range.htm

BORE - DESCRIPTION SHALLOW:
20 4.50mm Designed for specialist high playing, the larger bore gives less resistance than other shallow cups
20AX 4.00mm Extra-long cylindrical bore and shorter back-bore, for maximum control in the high register even when the lips are tired

The heavy cup is (ahem) heavier than a standard cup and a heavy Z cup is heavier than a Z cup. Here is a picture of a standard PHC cup (they all look the same on the outside):

Here's a heavy PHC cup:

A standard Z cup looks the same as a standard cup, but with a large letter Z engraved on it. I imagine a heavy Z cup will look the same as a heavy cup, but with the Z.

Many thanks for that. We intend to have a full PHC photo gallery. We have the photos and now we need to get them onto the site.

Glad to hear that! Finding the pics referenced above was quite a challenge.

Thanks a lot for your help. So if i understood correctly, you do not recommend heavy cups?

"So if i understood correctly, you do not recommend heave (sic) cups?"

Where did you get that idea? We've shown you what the superficial physical differences between standard, Z and heavy cups are, that's all. The prices are also different.

As for what the playing differences are and whether the Z, heavy and Z-heavy higher prices are worth it, I can't give you a complete answer. Having played on both standard and Z cups, I would go for the latter as giving a subtly better response and I would say they're worth the extra cost. How heavy and Z-heavy fit into the picture I can't say.

Glen I concur the Z cup is worth the extra money, particularly for playing softly. I think also that when playing loudly, the tone holds out a bit longer before edging out and becoming brassy. What the heavycup players like is a more 'focused' sound. I am not sure what is meant by 'focused sound' but I suspect it means brighter, more slotted, and fewer overtones. I do not have a heavy cup for my horn. But I do for the trumpet, and I find I am less able to vary the timbre with the heavy cup. The trumpet has too few colors to begin with, so I don't use the heavy cup often.
