TonyC, after your experience with metals of varying weights and densities, is it fair to say that the material may be a large part of the problem in nonmetal mouthpieces?
As for the Crystalite rims--on the assumption that they are cheaper than gold plate, I assume one gets the feel of new gold plate in perpetuity for a good deal less outlay and without the cold feeling when the rim is first against the lips. If so, count me in. (Not that the cold feeling worries me all that much.)

The plastic is probably OK but who designed the horn ones? Does anyone know of any serious professional horn players who use one?

We are currently making PHC rims in Crystalite, which is a clear, transparent plastic and these will be available through the soon to be added to this website "PHC Custom Shop" web page. These rims will be in addition to the existing white acetal PHC rims which we have been making for several years.
The new Crystalite rims have a very smooth finish, which is more like a new gold plated rim than the white acetal rims, which have a slightly textured finish. Some horn players like a super smooth new feeling rim and others like a rim which has aged a bit and is less smooth, with a finish which feels 'less new' with something to hang onto with the embouchure.
We are also making PHC rims in the old black plastic finish which were a standard PHC finish for many years. We moved away from black plastic rims to white acetal rims because, at that time, we found it difficult to finish the black plastic rims without polishing away the rim's shape. That meant that the black plastic rims tended to be very individual from one rim to another but hopefully we will be able to deliver accurately shaped rims this time around. That's the plan. We think that we have a more careful polishing technique which won't spoil the rim shape.
We have also been making PHC rims out of surgical grade stainless steel which will be available through the "PHC Custom Shop" page when it is ready to go live online.

We now have the full range of PHC rims in Crystalite and Black Acetal. The Black Acetal/plastic PHC rims are smoother than the white acetal PHC rims and were the non-metal rim of choice for many years. Anyway they are available now we have worked out how to polish them and still keep the original rim contour. We also have the full range of PHC cups with E tapers in stock as standard cup shape "Z" Cups. These will all be on the new PHC Custom Products page which is coming soon.
