The New John Packer/Rath horn was tried at rehearsal on Wednesday evening by 3 of us in the horn section, the other 2 players did not know the price of the horn so were 'blowing it blind' so to speak. One player who currently plays a Yamaha 667 commented that it blew 'like a Paxman' with a very open sound and said he would be happy to have one as a backup horn anytime. The other more mature player blew it for about 15 minutes and said he thought it would sell for about £3000 and was shocked to here what it would be selling at ! I blew it during some of the pieces and it performed VERY well and produced a rich full sound in the middle to lower register and it did seem somewhat easier to pitch when jumping up octaves than my Paxman 23M! Bearing in mind that it is aimed towards the 'student' market it should be a real winner which must be down to the Rath designed leadpipe. Does it sound and feel like a 'Paxman' because Mick Rath used to work at Paxmans (I wonder??).

Steve, thanks for the details about the updated version of the horn I tried at Watford, I shall be calling down to your shop over Easter to try it out. Thanks for the info.

Yesterday I tried out the new John Packer JP261RATH double french horn with the Rath designed leadpipe at the shop in Taunton. I considered the sample one I tried before at Watford last year to be very good but I was not prepared for the difference that the new leadpipe would make. It transformed the instrument into something that blows like a 'pro' horn and as Steve said it blows very much like a Paxman pro horn. My pupil tried the Yamaha 567, Holton 378 and the new JP261Rath and loved the ease of playing of the JP horn compared to the others and has ordered one already.
Well done Packers!
