I need to perform some short unaccompanied pieces at a friend's wedding. The music should appeal to a broad audience and there won't be a piano or other accompaniment available. I've got a few ideas, but just wondering what everyone's favourite unaccompanied solos are.
TIA Paul

If there is a sound system you could go down the Music Minus One route. http://www.musicminusone.co.uk/ There are several books of shortish pieces and you can also have a breather in the bars rest! My favourite unaccompanied solo? Krol's Laudatio. Not really a foot-tapper for a wedding though!

I love Laudatio, but not the best choice for a wedding.
May I suggest - Just Desserts - Lowell Shaw Vals Venezolano & Contradanza - Paquito D.Rivera (although this is for horn and orchestra/piano you can do it without accompianment).
ALSO - There are lots of collections from musicals and such that are for solo instrument and piano. You don't have to use the piano part since the tunes are so familiar, an example would be The Phantom of the Opera. You have to go through them a bit before performing so you know where to make your cuts but they work well.
AND - ETUDE BOOKS, my freind takes his Maxime Alphonse books with him for weddings. Again, find the etudes that sound prettiest (copy them so you don't have to pick and choose while you are there). And then when someone asks what that beautiful piece was, don't say it's an etude say it a short piece by a french composer.

Replying to IanF: Quote: If there is a sound system you could go down the Music Minus One route. http://www.musicminusone.co.uk/ And if you have a LOT of money to spend you could get an 'Absent Soloists' Mozart or Haydn concerto CD (currently selling for an obscene sum of £79.95 for all 4 Mozarts, or £19.95 for each concerto!)

The various 19th Century Concert Etudes and Caprices of Gallay, E. Paudert, and Oscar Franz work well. Easily abridged, they have that romantic flavor of a show piece encore.
I also like Herman Jeurissen's Four Chacteristic Studies for Horn - from McCoy's Horn Librbary. (and yes that is the spelling on the cover and frontsheet! perhaps a subtle joke?) They are short and quirky but entertaining.

My favorite for this setting is the Telemann Heroic Music (or Heroic Marches). 12 short contrasting pieces, accessible to the audience, easy to tailor for different timings, fun to play, etc. There are trumpet and organ or horn and organ versions available, but the brass part without accompaniment works fine. Much better for a wedding setting than the other suggestions.
